Neonatal herpes simplex virus-2 encephalitis.

چکیده
Of the two virologically distinct types of Herpes simplex viruses i.e., types 1 and 2, Herpes simplex virus-2 [HSV-2] is the predominant cause of neonatal disease, and is almost always acquired from an infected maternal genital tract. Perinatally transmitted HSV-2 infection in the neonate may have either a localized, disseminated or encephalitic pattern of presentation. The encephalitic from often remain undiagnosed as 4060% of neonates with central nervous system infection have no skin lesion at the time of clinical presentation(l). The outcome of the disease is largely dependent on a prompt diagnosis, which is difficult to make and adequate treatment, which is expensive. We are reporting the management of a neonate with HSV-2 encephalitis, which to our knowledge has not been documented earlier in Indian pediatric literature.

Background: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis is the most common cause of sporadic encephalitis, with significant morbidity and mortality that are effectively reduced by antiviral treatment. Herpes simplex infection in pregnant women rarely results in encephalitis. The most common symptoms of a pregnant woman with herpes simplex infection are colds and skin vesicles. ABSTRACT Background and Objective: Herpes simplex encephalitis is a life-threatening consequence of the central nervous system (CNS) infection with Herpes simplex virus (HSV). Although it is a rare disease, mortality rates reach 70% in the absence of therapy and only a minority of individuals can return to normal function. The aim of this study was to d...
متن کاملNeonatal case of herpes simplex virus encephalitis after delivery from a woman whose genital herpes simplex virus infection had been treated with acyclovir.
A case of herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis in a neonate after delivery from a woman whose genital HSV infection had been treated with acyclovir is reported. The main approach to prevent genital HSV infection in the neonate is interruption of transmission at the time of delivery. Guidelines for prophylactic therapy with acyclovir have been established, but the risk of neonatal infection r...
متن کاملHerpes simplex virus infections of the central nervous system.
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections of the central nervous system (CNS) can occur within weeks after birth (neonatal HSV disease) or in childhood or adulthood [herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE)]. Most cases of neonatal HSV disease are caused by HSV type 2, whereas virtually all cases of HSE are caused by HSV type 1. Diagnostic advances made during the past decade include the application of po...
